~Olde Silver & Sweet Annie~

As spring has taken her sweet time arriving in northern Michigan, my thoughts turn to my flower garden, which is primarily perennials, with spatterings of snapdragons, cosmos, and a host of scattered wild seeds, mixed in with bird houses, two 'houses' formed from old painted white paned windows, pieces of farm fences, and the century old bricks I finally made into a winding path thru the flower garden last summer. (Pictures of my flower garden on the website) This year, to mark where new seeding is planted, I am using old silver forks, sadly past their prime, to hold the packets to remind me what is planted where. 3 packets of sweet annie seed and 5 forks

~The Mourning of Ren B. Parker~ /font>

~The Mourning of Ren B. Parker~ ....an old country cemetery is near here. I visit it often. The 'old sections' with the old graves dominate the south side, where the families of the dead are long gone also and they receive little to no attention. I have long felt these graves and their names should not be forgotten and each year clean some of them and give them flowers. Often wild flowers of pale lavender flax grow across them in late spring and early summer in remembrance of who rests there from over a century ago. Often their only flowers. In cleaning one large embanked lot one spring I found under nearly a foot of decaying years old leaves, this tiny gravestone. Barely legible, I used pencil and paper tracing to find the words. I sat on the ground, crying for this families loss, of this son, who died before his first birthday, and was forever changed by the stone words. Ren B. Parker Nov 30, 1890 - Oct 9, 1891 I will remember you. I whisper your name. Old once ornate frame 15x18x2-1/2", with parts showing major wear. Words of his gravestone, stitched freehand on old grainsack.

~ Makedo Pincushion~

Makedo.  A term put into practice a century ago to describe the everyday custom of 'making' do with what they had. Using bits and pieces of left over remnants to repurpose into something useful and not waste. These pincushions are made from old quilt squares filled with stuffing, draped on old glass insulators and wrapped securely with aged store bobbin string. Heavily aged. Fabric colors vary.

~ Pieces from the old Table~

Always intrigued by old silverware, its condition not important, but preferably with signs of age and some tarnish, I have collected for some time now. Patterns do not match. Some are tarnished. Some are dark. All have beauty. Most are silver-plate. All are olde.  Place setting of 4 spoons, 4 forks and 4 knives.
